George Clooney to Discuss Role in “Good Night, and Good Luck” at Reel Journalism With Nick Clooney

Washington, DC (Vocus) November 11, 2008

The Newseum, in partnership with American University’s School of Communication, announced yesterday that actor and director George Clooney will be among the featured discussion panelists for the Reel Journalism With Nick Clooney film series. George Clooney will discuss his role in the 2005 film “Good Night, and Good Luck,” in which legendary newsman Edward R. Murrow stands against Sen. Joseph McCarthy.

The Reel Journalism film series, featuring one film each month, will take place in the Newseum’s state-of-the-art Walter and Leonore Annenberg Theater. Programs will include screenings of the films accompanied by live discussions with prominent filmmakers, award-winning actors and top journalists. The series kicks off on Monday, Dec. 8, with “Broadcast News,” a 1987 romantic comedy revolving around three television news broadcasters.

Veteran journalist Nick Clooney, author of the book “The Movies That Changed Us: Reflections on the Screen,” will host the series. Clooney, who was appointed Distinguished Journalist in Residence at AU’s School of Communication earlier this fall, will teach a course based on his book in spring 2009. The appointment is part of a long-term partnership between the school and the Newseum. Clooney also is a familiar face to viewers of the American Movie Classics cable network.

Tickets to the four films featured at the Reel Journalism film series will be sold as a package. A four-pack of tickets costs $ 125 per person and includes all-day admission to the Newseum on the day of each film. Tickets are available at the Newseum admission desk or at newseum.org]. Dec. 8, 2008, 7 p.m. — “Broadcast News” (1987)

Panelists: Susan Zirinsky, CBS News, executive producer of “48 Hours” and adviser for the film; Bob Schieffer, CBS News, moderator of “Face the Nation”

Summary: Three ambitious reporters discover that the world of television news is more than they bargained for in this quirky romantic comedy. CBS executive producer, Susan Zirinsky, the inspiration for the character portrayed by actress Holly Hunter, will join Bob Schieffer, moderator of “Face the Nation,” to discuss the film’s foreshadowing of the changes occurring in the TV news business today.

Jan. 26, 2009, 7 p.m. — “Good Night, and Good Luck” (2005)

Panelists: George Clooney, actor and director

Summary: At the height of Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s anti-Communist campaign in the 1950s, legendary CBS newsman Edward R. Murrow takes on McCarthy against a backdrop of intense political pressure. Academy Award-winning actor George Clooney, who directed, co-wrote and starred in the docudrama, discusses his inspiration for bringing the tale of Murrow’s most memorable moment to the silver screen.

Feb. 23, 2009, 7 p.m. — “Citizen Kane” (1941)

Panelists: Tom Shales, The Washington Post; Frank Mankiewicz, son of Herman Mankiewicz, co-writer of the film

Summary: Loosely based on the life of newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst, Orson Welles’s iconic 1941 classic is hailed as one of the greatest films ever made. Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post television and film critic Tom Shales and Frank Mankiewicz, son of Herman Mankiewicz, winner of an Academy Award for writing the “Citizen Kane” screenplay, share their thoughts on the film’s enduring legacy.

March 16, 2009, 7 p.m. — “All the President’s Men” (1976)

Panelists: Bob Woodward, The Washington Post

Summary: Investigating the 1972 Watergate break-in, Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein follow a trail of deception that leads them all the way to the Nixon White House, and ultimately to the resignation of an American president. Nearly 40 years later, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bob Woodward discusses what it was like to expose government corruption at its highest level and provides his insights into how the reel experience relates to the reality.

George Timothy Clooney (* 6. Mai 1961 in Lexington, Kentucky) ist US-amerikanischer Schauspieler, Drehbuchautor, Produzent und Regisseur.

Leben

Die ersten Erfahrungen mit dem Showbusiness machte Clooney bereits im Alter von fünf Jahren, als er seinem Vater Nick Clooney, Fernsehmoderator in Illinois, bei einer Quizsendung die Texttafeln hielt.

Erste Fernsehrollen [Bearbeiten]

Den aus einer Entertainerfamilie stammenden Clooney zog es Anfang der 1980er Jahre ins Filmgeschäft, wo er aber zunächst trotz Vermittlung seiner Tante, der Filmschauspielerin und Sängerin Rosemary Clooney, stets nur Rollen in zweitklassigen Pilotfilmen amerikanischer Fernsehserien erhielt, die mangels Erfolg immer nur auf eine Episode beschränkt blieben. Die einzige längere Rolle in dieser Zeit hatte Clooney in der Sitcom Roseanne. Darin spielte er in einigen Folgen Booker Brooks, den Vorgesetzten von Roseanne und ihrer Schwester.

Vom Fernseh- zum Filmstar

Mitte der 1990er Jahre bekam Clooney die Rolle des Kinderarztes Doug Ross in der Krankenhausserie Emergency Room angeboten. Der Familiensinn der Familie Clooney äußerte sich auch in Gastauftritten von Rosemary Clooney als an Alzheimer erkrankte ehemals berühmte Sängerin Mary Cavanaugh, sowie von seinem Cousin Miguel Ferrer als krebskrankem Patienten.

Clooneys weibliche Fan-Gemeinde war schließlich so groß, dass auch die Filmproduzenten in Hollywood nicht mehr an ihm vorbei konnten. Dabei bewies er eine gewisse Vorliebe für skurrile Rollen (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) der Gebrüder Coen oder seines Freundes Steven Soderbergh, um sich nicht nur auf die insbesondere von den Medien zugedachte Rolle des eleganten, leicht schlitzohrigen Womanizers beschränken zu lassen. Anders als David Caruso, der ebenso populär in NYPD Blue war, gelang es Clooney, im Filmgeschäft Fuß zu fassen.

Drehbuchautor, Produzent und Regisseur

Mit dem Fernsehfilm Kilroy gab Clooney 1999 sein Debut als Drehbuchautor. Gleichzeitig war es der erste Film, für den er als Produzent verantwortlich war. Mit Geständnisse – Confessions of a Dangerous Mind folgte im Jahr 2002 sein Regiedebüt. Für den mehrfach ausgezeichneten Film Good Night, and Good Luck. führte er die Regie, fungierte als Co-Drehbuchautor und trat selbst als Darsteller vor die Kamera. Von Februar bis Mai 2007 drehte Clooney seinen neuesten Streifen Leatherheads, eine Footballkomödie, die in den 1920er Jahren angesiedelt ist. George Clooney ist Co-Autor, Regisseur und Hauptdarsteller des Films, der voraussichtlich Ende 2007 in den amerikanischen Kinos anlaufen wird. An seiner Seite ist Renee Zellwegger zu sehen.

Werbeträger

Seit 2004 steht Clooney für Fernsehwerbung von Martini vor der Kamera. Für diese Werbekampagne wurde der Slogan „No Martini? – No party!“ entwickelt. In einem Interview mit der britischen Ausgabe der Vogue sagt Clooney dazu: „Die Werbespots sollen selbstironisch sein. Ich nehme mich und mein Image darin bewusst auf den Arm. Es war ein Riesenspaß, einen Spot zu drehen, in dem Frauen dem ‚großartigen‘ George Clooney die Türe vor der Nase zuschlagen, weil er keinen Martini zur Party mitbringt.“ [1]

Auch der Schweizer Lebensmittelkonzern Nestlé bewirbt seit 2006 sein Produkt Nespresso mit George Clooney, geprägt wurde dabei der Spruch: „Nespresso – What else?“, auch hier nahm man das Image Clooneys bewusst ironisch wahr.

Ebenso wirbt George Clooney für Omega, eine schweizer Uhrenmarke der weltbekannten Swatch Group.

Privatleben

Clooney war von 1989 bis 1992 mit der Schauspielerin Talia Balsam verheiratet.

Im Juni 2004 erwirkte er eine gerichtliche Verfügung, mit der Hubschrauber-Piloten der direkte Flug über seine italienische Villa am Comer See untersagt wurde.

Politisches Engagement

Der überzeugte Kriegsgegner bezieht offen Stellung in seinen Rollen (z.B. Three Kings) und bei öffentlichen Auftritten gegenüber der offensiven Außenpolitik des amerikanischen Präsidenten George W. Bush.

Im März 2004 sammelte Clooney Wahlkampfspenden. Doch nicht etwa für einen demokratischen Spitzenkandidaten: Er persönlich lud per Honorar zu einem Fund-Raising-Dinners, wo die Gäste pro Kopf 1500 bis 2500 Dollar zahlten, um den Wahlkampf von Clooneys Vater Nick zu unterstützen, der mit den gesammelten 250.000 Dollar für das Repräsentantenhaus kandidierte.

Clooney reiste in den vergangenen Jahren mehrfach in die Krisenregion Darfur um auf die dortige Menschenrechtslage aufmerksam zu machen.
